Here’s a new one of an alligator with a new trick.

It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything here but I have been hard at work. In addition to writing and penciling a couple book projects, I’ve just launched the final version of my portfolio site.
So feel free to take a look!
So I had a little bit of time between my last 2 books, and started to paint out some sketches that I had done. This is one of them. I asked my soon-to-be-3 year old son what it was, and he replied without hesitation “a chipmunk!”
So here are the 3 stages (final color, value work and initial sketch) of “Kyle’s Chipmunk.”
I just found this and thought I’d share. This is the process of painting a 3 blind mice illustration that I did many years ago. It’s “loosely” based on Pieter Bruegel’s “blind leading the blind” painting. The Gif starts off with the pencil, then the underpainting, and then working out the color. This was produced all in Photoshop and to be honest I think there is a less saturated more refined version of this image floating around my Mac somewhere. I’ll upload it once I find it.
The only thing that I would do differently in the painting process today would be finalizing the value structure earlier in the process. Probably in the underpainting phase.
Here’s another sketchbook cover that I don’t believe that I’ve posted yet. I used india ink with my airbrush. It worked pretty well.
By the way my self portrait is off to the right wearing the round glasses. And now that I look at it, check out the awesomely asymmetrical nostrils on “Mr. Chosen Guy!” That light might not be a good thing.
